What is Liver

Diagnosis of Fatty liver
Liver Function Test-
Prothrombin time (PT) TEST –
Prothrombin time (PT) is a blood test that measures the time it takes for the plasma of your blood to clot. The PT result will be longer in persons who take blood thinners. The normal range is 11 – 13.5 seconds.
INR TEST –
Liver dysfunction can lead to decreased production of certain clotting factors The ratio of the sample’s Prothrombin Time to the Prothrombin Time of a normal sample of blood. The result is 1.0, up to 1.5, is therefore normal.
SGPT –
SGPT is also known as Alanine aminotransferase.This enzyme plays a role in processing proteins. When the liver is injured or inflamed, levels of ALT in the blood usually rise. The normal level of SGPT is 7 to 60 units per liter.
SGOT –
This enzyme is also called Aspartate aminotransferase. Like ALT, AST also plays a role in processing proteins. If the liver is injured, the body releases AST into the blood, so the level rises in the blood. The normal level of SGOT is 3 to 45 units per liter.
Alkaline phosphatase –
This enzyme is found in liver and various other body parts. But ALP levels that are higher than normal can be a sign of liver diseases. The normal range is 44 to 147 IU/L.
Total bilirubin and direct bilirubins –
Bilirubin is a byproduct of the normal breakdown of red blood cells. It usually passes through the liver and is excreted from thye body. Bilirubin levels in the blood can rise and the skin can take on the yellow discoloration known as jaundice. Tests for bilirubin may be total (measuring the level of all of the bilirubin in the blood) or direct (measuring only bilirubin ). Direct bilirubin: 0 to 0.3 mg/dL. Total bilirubin: 0.3 to 1.9 mg/dL.
Albumin and total protein –
Liver dysfunction can lead to changes in the amounts of albumin and other proteins it produces. The normal range of albumin is 3.4 – 5.4 grams per deciliter (g/dL). The normal range of total protein is 6.0 to 8.3 gm/dL.
